INBIOMAR III researches how threatened marine biodiversity evolves in three remote Spanish areas located in North Africa.
Similar to previous projects (INBIOMAR and INBIOMAR II), it uses Reef Life Survey methodology and citizen participation to
update and expand the database on local biodiversity. The results of INBIOMAR III will contribute to defining future conservation
strategies and promoting a more sustainable use of marine resources.
The project aims to improve the understanding of coastal fish species through the integration of marine biodiversity data
collected using the Reef Life Survey methodology and eDNA analysis. The combination of both techniques allows for a more
comprehensive and accurate inventory of existing marine biodiversity. The main goal is to strengthen conservation and management
strategies for the coastal marine ecosystems of the northern Mediterranean Sea.
SERMARES conducts a plural valuation of the coastal nature in Melilla, including marine protected and unprotected areas, to
offer measures aimed at reducing existing conflicts. Using an interdisciplinary methodological approach, employing questionnaires
and Reef Life Survey to estimate local marine biodiversity, the project investigates why Melilla's society values the coastal environment.
This will help guide decision-makers in reducing and preventing conflicts and achieving greater equity and sustainability.
